More about our program
History
Soren Gordhamer began teaching meditation to youth at juvenile
halls in 1997 shortly thereafter he founded the Lineage Project.
Soren was inspired by the work of Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn of The
University of Massachusetts Medical Center, who has spent
more than 17 years studying the effects of yoga and meditation
on critically ill patients and post incarcerated populations.
Dr. Kabat-Zinn has been an advocate of the project, stressing
the importance of working with at-risk populations, and the
value of bringing these practices to non-traditional environments.
In 2000 Mayor Rudolph Guiliani awarded the Mayor’s Voluntary
Action Award to the Lineage Project. It has been featured
in the documentary “The Fire of Yoga” and noticed
by the Dalai Lama and several celebrities including Richard
Gere and Christy Turlington.
We currently conduct our program in collaboration with local
community- based organizations, schools, and New York City
and State detention facilities. Our current community partners include the:
New York State Office of Children and Family Services, New York City Department
of Juvenile Justice, Fortune Society, and Brooklyn Job Corps.
